Adam Silver, born April 25, 1962, is an American lawyer and sports executive who now serves as the NBA’s fifth and current commissioner.
He joined the NBA in 1992 and has held numerous roles inside the league, eventually rising to the post of chief operations officer and deputy commissioner under his predecessor and mentor, David Stern, in 2006. Silver took over as commissioner when Stern departed in 2014.
During Silver’s reign, the league expanded monetarily and worldwide, particularly in China. Silver made waves in 2014 when he forced Donald Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers before barring Sterling from all NBA games and functions for life for racist statements.

Silver grew up in a Jewish-American home. His father, Edward Silver (1921-2004), was a labour law specialist and senior partner at the legal firm Proskauer Rose.
Silver grew raised in Rye, New York, a northern Westchester County suburb of New York City. He graduated from Rye High School in 1980.
Silver attended Duke University after graduating from high school. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1984.
From 1984 to 1985, he served as a legislative aide to Les AuCoin, a member of the United States House of Representatives. Silver then attended the University of Chicago Law School, where he earned his law degree in 1988.
Silver worked as a law clerk for Judge Kimba Wood of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York after graduating from law school. He then worked as an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore.
