After four seasons with Cape Breton, Fleury’s jersey number 29 was retired by the team on January 25, 2008, during his fourth NHL season.
How is the career of Marc going?
Fleury was dealt to the Minnesota Wild on March 21, 2022, in return for a conditional 2022 second-round selection, which would become a first-round pick if the Wild reached the 2022 Western Conference Final with Fleury winning four games. The Wild’s general manager, Bill Guerin, was a former Penguins teammate of Fleury’s.
He made his NHL debut on March 26 against the Columbus Blue Jackets, backstopping the club to a 3-2 overtime victory. A fan tossed a bouquet of flowers on the ice after the game. Fleury remarked that this was the first time something like this had ever happened.
Fleury chose to forego free agency and instead signed a two-year, $7 million contract deal with the Wild on July 7, 2022. The Wild’s decision to extend Fleury led to a spat with Talbot, who was later sent to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Filip Gustavsson.
When the Wild defeated the Blackhawks on October 30, Fleury earned his 62nd shootout win and became the NHL career leader in shootout wins.
Gustavsson would outperform Fleury for much of the season, sparking discussion over who would be the team’s starter.
Fleury recognised his struggles, stating that he had “been in my head probably too much.” His performance improved as the Wild entered March, and he went on an extended point run.
