Who is Mike Zimmer?

Michael Zimmer, born June 5, 1956, is the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. Zimmer previously worked at Jackson State, where both college programmes were overseen by Deion Sanders. 

From 2014 to 2021, he was also the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). 

Zimmer worked as a defensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, and Cincinnati Bengals from 1994 to 2013. In 1996, Zimmer won Super Bowl XXX with the Dallas Cowboys.

Zimmer was a standout multi-sport athlete in high school, earning all-conference honours in football (1972-73), baseball, and wrestling at Lockport Township High School in Lockport, Illinois. 

He attended Illinois State University and majored in physical education. He started at quarterback in 1974, but redshirted the next year and shifted to linebacker in 1976 after injuring his thumb. 

That same year, a neck injury ended his playing career. His collegiate colleagues were affected positively by his persistent “up” attitude, particularly during scorching August pre-season double exercises. 

In 1974, he backed up quarterback Bob Lopez, who went on to establish several of Illinois State’s passing records.
